The Tale of Christmas Card Santa - 11/21/2007
Posted By:   Mary Dally-Muenzmaier

When we were little, our parents had a fancy Santa Christmas card holder that we would hang up every year. It was made of soft felt and all the cards we received from family and friends would be tucked into the pockets of his black-buttoned red suit. With his smiling, pink face atop and his tiny white boots dangling a good three feet below, he was not the most accurately proportioned of Santas, but he nonetheless served his purpose well for nigh on forty years.

While playing with our new toys, we would often look up at Christmas card Santa and feel a bit sad for him. He held so many cards in his pockets--some layered three and four deep--that the supple felt would sag with the weight, sometimes giving way as the cards fluttered to the floor. But it wasn't just the heavy burden Christmas card Santa was required to support that saddened us, it was also the knowledge that the majority of the cards he so patiently held would never really be looked at or read again--that the holiday journey of his precious cargo would end not in a drawer of treasured correspondence but rather in the trash. It was the futility of his labor that struck us as somewhat tragic, even while he smiled down at us and wished everyone a Merry Christmas.

We tell you this tale, dear reader, not to make you cheerless or unhappy but to make a simple yet important point. You see, when we were little there were no residential recycling programs and so when we say that these mounds of holiday cards ended up in the trash, we mean it quite literally. And not just ours, but everyone's. And that's the real, honest to goodness tragedy.

The better story, however, is that we now live in slightly more enlightened times and we can reduce are environmental impact during the holidays by sending cards made from recycled paper, which we can then recycle again. But not only that, these days we can give something even better than a traditional Christmas card, we can give Stone Creek's Christmas Card Coffee!

Christmas Card Coffee comes in resealable half and one pound bags, so the coffee stays fresh and the bags can be used again and again. You can create your own label, too, with a photo and personalized message, so you don't even need to send paper Christmas cards at all. Isn't that amazing? Yes, we think so, too, which is why we say, 'This year, say it with coffee!'
