The Coffee Workshop (our Friday cupping group) was at it again last week,
this time going with an all organic coffee theme. The Workshop cupped four new
organics, coffees that were candidates for new organic coffee blends. The
candidates included a Fair Trade Organic Mexican coffee, a Fair Trade Organic
Peruvian coffee, a Fair Trade Organic Papua New Guinea coffee, and a Fair Trade
Organic Ethiopian Yirgacheffe.
The Yirgacheffe was the overall
favorite, garnering a 6.5 score overall. The score reflects a split opinion--at
least three people rating the coffee at 8 or above while a couple scored it as
average or below. Comments about the Yirgacheffe were "very smooth, some
chocolate," "really together," "buzzy, chocolatey," and "good balance,
earthy."
The Mexican and the Papua New Guinea coffees had mixed
results as well, and scored slight lower overall than the Yirgacheffe. Some
found the Mexican "velvety" and "slightly nutty", while others tasted "soy
sauce" and "grass clippings". The Papua New Guinea was "slightly sweet,"
"balanced" and "winey" to those that like brighter coffees, while the big-body
crowd found it "weak," "mushy" and "lacking something."
Everyone
has an opinion, which is why we run the Workshop. Somewhere, in all of those
scores, might be an opinion that matches your
own.
