The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - 7/5/2005
Posted By:   Christie Boivin

Last Friday we had one of our most interesting cupping sessions to date.  None of the coffees we tasted are in our current lineup and the results were an eclectic mix that included the good, the bad and the ugly.

First, the Good.  We can't say enough about the Yemen Mocca Sanani that we tasted.  People were buzzing before the session even ended about this highly aromatic, flavorful coffee from one of the oldest growing regions in the world.  It scored the highest of any coffee to date (a median score of 9.0), so it's a no-brainer: Look for this coffee in our stores very soon.

Second, the Bad.  Our friends the Green Team (who source our green coffee) threw an very old coffee into the mix just for fun.  A very ancient Colombian.  Not surprisingly, it scored a 4.0. For the record, old coffee tastes like 'hay', 'ground beef', or 'leather' according to our group.

And finally, the Ugly.  Occasionally, we get asked whether we carry Kona coffee and we have to admit that we don't.  Not that we haven't tried, but we can't find one that we feel justifies the price.  We cupped a Kona Fancy on Friday that the Green Team thought was okay and we found it to be okay as well. The ugly part is that the coffee costs $15 per pound unroasted.   In our humble opinion, it's just not worth it.  We haven't given up on Kona, though. We'll just keep looking.
