Update From Brazil: The Harvest Has Begun - 6/3/2010
Posted By:   Steve Hawthorne

The coffee harvest has begun on the Sinay Neve's Family's Conquista Farm. We received an update on the harvest from Fernando Neves, Chief Agronomer on the estate.

To Stone Creek Coffee-

We have begun the harvest! This year the harvest has begun 15 days earlier than usual. Currently we are enjoying a spectacular climate for the harvesting of coffee due to a very low relative humidity in the air. Coffee harvesting is interesting because the conditions are never the same from one year to the next. This year, as an example, the coffee cherries are very easy to pull of the branches. This means the harvester in the field yields more in a day’s work, which means more money for him and his family. This also means that the loss of healthy leaves in the harvesting process is much smaller than usual, which is good news for the next year’s crop.

Our farm has purchased some new equipment in the drive to increase the quality of our milling even more. It is a new machine, recently developed and released that filters the water in our wet mill that we recycle back into the mill. This means that the recycled water is more pure than before, and our machinery can work with greater efficiency. In the semi-washed process coffees that you get the water has a lubricating function for the machinery and is used in moving the beans around—having clean recycled water is key to using water rationally and in expanding the life-cycle of our machinery.

As a way to bring in Stone Creek Coffee and its clients, I have taken a few pictures and attached them for you.
